E3 09 Opens Doors to Bloggers?

E3 ConferenceSince the major disappointment of E3 08 the rumor is that the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) will be returning to the older model of the more successful E3 conferences. Although the conference has been closed to the public the ESA is shooting for a much larger attendance in 09; they are hoping to have an attendance ten times the size of E3 08.

Despite the fact that E3 09 will not be selling tickets to the public, they do intend to draw a large crowd by opening the doors of the conference to wider range of journalists. According to Kotaku the rumor is that any individual that contributes to the relaying of knowledge through the written word will be allowed to attend the event; meaning any one who has a blog.  For now this is only speculation, but hopefully the horrors of the ‘invite only’ policy of the past two years has ended.

Although the guest list is still undecided for E3 09, we do know when and where it will be held. The show will remain at the Los Angeles Convention Center June 2nd-June 4th.  Although the location and dates are set in stone the layout of the conference is still undecided.  Whether there will be a return of the booth babes, which was wildly popular at the older conferences (for the obvious reasons) will be returning, is unclear. Also, the return of the booming mega woofers of the old E3s and free schwag are also undecided.

It seems that the ESA is making strides to return to the mold of the older E3 conferences, that the fans have been hoping for. The dates and location are clear but the big question of open attendance still looms in the distance.  If bloggers of any type are indeed able to attend arm your on-line accounts and be ready.

Little Big Planet Recall

Character from Little Big PlanetSony is eating dirt today because of a world wide recall of their upcoming Little Big Planet release; the highly anticipated platforming title due for release this Tuesday. Apparently all deliveries have been halted because of references to Islamic text in the games sound track. Gamers are reeling over the news since this is one of the largest recalls in recent history.

Sony was quoted as saying “during the review process prior to the release of Little Big Planet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur’an. We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologize for any offense that this may have caused.”

Although this will delay the release of the game, Sony has stated the game will be re-released the week of October 27th.

Bioshock 2 Mystery Trailer Leaked

BioShock fans get ready to drool. A mystery trailer for the sequel to the FPS mega hit has leaked on-line. The trailer was supposedly hidden in the PS3 BioShock version of the game, in the extra’s menu after beating the game. The trailer, titled BioShock 2; Sea of Dreams is a shaky cam style video showing the trailer on screen.

The trailer shows a grown up little sister from the original game standing on the edge of the Atlantic; clutching a big daddy doll. The sound of classic 40′s style music begins to play and then suddenly sand castles form in the sand rising like miniature cities behind her; cities seeming oddly reminiscent of Rapture (who would have thought).

Though all of this is just speculation at this point, the trailer seems authentic. From here well will just have to wait and see what happens.

Obama Trying To Reach Gamers… Using Video Games! Now That’s Change We Can Believe In!

People who have been ignoring their civic duty and have been spending more time gaming than being involved in the shaping the future of our country, your days are numbered.

Barack Obama's Campaign ad in Burnouut Paradise from EALast week while gamers were pealing out in Burnout Paradise, a new title released by EA; they noticed when passing one of those hairpin turns an Obama campaign billboard rising in the distance. It has recently been confirmed that Barack Obama is indeed the first Presidential Candidate to purchase ad space inside a video game. according to the Associated Press Obama has paid for add space in 9 EA titles, including Madden 09, and Burnout Paradise.

“I can confirm that the Obama campaign has paid for in-game advertising in Burnout” Holly Rockwood, the director of corporate communications at Electronic Arts stated “like most television, radio, and print outlets, we accept advertising from credible political candidates.” She also went on to say “Like political spots on the television networks, these ads do not reflect the political policies of EA or the opinions of its development teams.”

The idea of advertising within video games is a relatively new concept and was less than a consideration for candidates 18 months ago.  Although some may say Obama is sending mixed messages through these ads; seeing how he had stated earlier that parents should cut back on their children’s game time, maybe it is just his less than subtle way of motivating gamers to get involved.

The Prince of Persia TGS Trailer Video

The new Prince of Persia trailer was revealed at the Tokyo Game show yesterday, and it seems that the new game sticks to the same type of platforming that made the series great.

Although PoP carries the same type game play that fans love,  make no mistake this game is a reinvention of the franchise.  The first and most obvious change between this game and the original is the new artistic styling of the graphics; atmospheres that are rich in color, and light. The second would be the change in the combat system, in which there is evolving A.I. in the form of Elika the Prince’s companion in the Game, and new character in the series. Lastly the other notable change is the open world structure of the game that gives it a less constrained feeling of the original Sands of Time game.

The plot of the new game is based on a world wide threat called “The Corruption” a dark substance that is the manifestation of the God of Darkness, Ahriman. The Corruption contaminants every living thing it comes into contact with, and is slowly plunging the world into darkness. The Prince must partner with Elika a woman who possesses the ancient power to purge The Corruption.  Together they must fight side by side to purge The corruption from the world and stop Ahriman from plunging it into darkness.

Combined with the classic elements that have carried from the old games, and the new elements that have been infused; Prince of Persia has become one of the hottest upcoming releases.  According to the majority of gamers in the community PoP is one of the must have titles to be released this year. Fans seem eager to get there hands on this game. It is due to hit the shelves Dec. 2nd, so mark your calendar.

Here is the trailer from the Tokyo Game Show.

Max Payne Explodes onto the screen Oct. 17th

As the gaming industry continues to grow we see more and more of our favorite game titles adapted to screen. Some have had moderate success; the Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil films, and then others not so much.  One of the upcoming films that fans are hopeful about is Max Payne; which was a title released by Rockstar in 2001, and was wildly popular at the time for its game play due to its slow motion capabilities.

The film will be hitting theaters October 17th , and its plot is based on that of the game.  Max, being played by Mark Wahlberg, is an inner city cop whose family and partner are brutally murdered. In the pursuit of retribution for these disturbing crimes, Max plunges into the depths of a dark, gritty underworld; in which he discovers enemies beyond the mortal realm and a betrayal beyond imagination.

The film was Directed by John Moore who is best known for Behind Enemy Lines, his Directorial debut.  The cast consists of Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, The Italian Job) as Payne, Mila Kunis (That 70′s show) as supporting actress, and Chris Ludacris Bridges (Crash) as supporting Actor. Although Mark Wahlberg has refused to play the game, he says it is nothing personal it is only because he doesn’t want to indulge his addictive nature; and since he has claimed that playing Max Payne is his favorite role yet, fans of the game may let it slide.

Mark who is no stranger to the action film genre was praised for his supporting role in The Departed which also got him an Oscar nod. Although Mark has an almost iconic role to live up to, fans seem elated with him playing Payne, and more than satisfied with the supporting role of the beautiful Mila Kunis.

The trailer has fans starving for all the gritty bullet riddled goodness that is Max Payne the movie. I guess for now we will have to rely on the trailer to satisfy our hunger for mayhem.

Here is the official Max Payne trailer.

Below is an interview with the cast at Comic-Con; on the Max Payne film, the game, and the fans.

RF Online Kills Servers

Codemasters has announced that RF Online, their first MMO title will be shutting down their European and North American servers on November 10th.  Codmasters has made a statement that negotiations between them and CCR, the current holders to the rights of RF Online have failed; and since Codemaster’s contract is due to expire they must shutdown all western servers.

Codemasters has disabled all account subscriptions to the game to prevent users from creating any new accounts. The last full day of game play will be Nov. 9th,  all western servers will be shutdown the next morning.

RF or Rising Force Online was Codemasters first MMO title, and it was one of the first MMORPG‘s of that time to achieve success in the Western Market.  As unhappy as fans are to see the game leave our Western shores; the blow is just as bad for Codemasters.  The company was very happy with the results of their first MMO title and are sad to see its run come to an end. Codemastser has posted an official statement on their website.

A fascinating book on the future direction of the Net

I saw this author on the PBS show, ‘Charlie Rose’ a few months ago and then recently bought his book entitled ‘The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It’ (an attention grabbing title I know) – anyway, the Author is Jonathan Zittrain, He is a Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation at Oxford University and co-founder of Harvard Law School’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society.

This fascinating book covers the history of the Net and its future, touching on how the everyday, reprogrammable PCs may be replaced by new appliances and Web 2.0 platforms. He contends these new platforms will create new gatekeepers – plus, more opportunities for regulation.

Basically, the author describes how so much use of the Internet is going in a direction that some think goes against the principles that made the Internet great.

One of the main principles he mentions is what he calls ‘generativity flexibility’ regarding the creation of hardware, operating systems, applications, or websites that allow people to make new contributions, often resulting in unexpected contributions where people can continue to build upon further and continually improve.

He fears the increasing use of “tethered appliances” to perform Internet-related tasks threatens this pattern – despite. . . Wikis, Linux, Apache web servers and the IBM PC’s open architecture – plus, other platforms that have come into existence up to this point.

Innovative products such as Apple’s iPhone, TiVo, and the XBox 360. etc. are actually tightly controlled by their developers and manufacturers. So, any innovations built on these platforms are coming from companies that control them.

. . .you can write a new app for the iPhone but nobody can load your application onto his/her iPhone until it passes through Apple, is approved, and then distributed by Apple.

Even though the Internet grew by people creating new open apps. . . Now, if you want to add a new menu option to Firefox – there is no such approval process for people to use it. . .

Even though his book seems pessimistic, Zittrain presents a hopeful argument for how we can build on current work by technical users and legal scholars to stop or at least slow down what he sees as the pending state of a corporate-controlled Internet.

Hope, Zittrain argues – lies with the millions of users out there.  People who use technologies like Wikipedia where people can work to develop new technologies and social spaces that enable people to collaborate and foster what he hopes are the real “netizens.”

Nintendo announces the new DSI

Nintendo has finally revealed its newest portable game system in the form of the Nintendo DSI. The new hand held device will have a variety of new features that are definite upgrades from the DS Lite; including a camera, larger screen, and download capabilities.  The new camera feature will allow you to edit your photos using the touch sensitive screen.  The new SD slot which will allow download able content from the Nintendo online store, is perhaps the nicest new feature of the unit.

Although Nintendo has decided to remove the Game Boy Advanced slot form the DSI, the new  SD slot should more than compensate for the change. Along with the other features mentioned the DSI will also include; enhanced audio, longer battery life, and less charging time.  It seems all together Nintendo has developed a sleeker, more efficient unit for release.

The word is that the new DSI will be released on the market in Japan by November 1st of this year. A release in North America has been speculated for sometime in 2009.
