Twitter gets hit by politically charged DDOS attack

I am sure you all are aware that Twitter was the target of a DDOS attack yesterday. The attack crippled the site and caused it to crash for almost 3 hours. Today Twitter is up but is still having serious functional issues. A certain number of apps are disabled, and users are not able to use simple user options. Twitter is still very much under attack, and Biz Stone has stated that it is politically motivated.

Fail Whale Draging down Tweets“The ongoing, massively coordinated attacks on Twitter this week appear to have been geopolitical in motivation.”

The sites defenses are currently being fortified, but the threat is ongoing. Biz Stone stated “In the past 24 hours, we’ve been contending with a variety of attacks that continue to change in nature and intensity. ” He also went on to say “no data or personal information of any kind has been compromised,” so the good news is that you, as an individual user, are not in danger.

Tumblr launches TumblUpon Bar

t seems all the major social media sites are going bar crazy, because almost all of them have one now. Apparently Tumblr was feeling left out so they created their own bar and titled it, wait for it, Tumblupon. Well it isn’t the most original name out there, but it does get their point across.

The Tumblr Bar

The TumblUpon bar, not to be confused with StumbleUpon, will send you to random submission from other users. You will have the option to like or dislike the submissions you are taken to. You will also have a button that will return you to your own original page on the site.

Tumblr was founded in 2007 by David Karp, and it is another site known for micro-blogging. It focuses on ease of use and customization. Whether the new bar will help the site get in with the “we have a cool bar club,” only time will tell.

EA reporting a not so bad loss

EA muti-logoAlthough losing money is never good for a company, EA is reporting a loss of only $6 million for their fist quarter. Good news for the struggling publisher. It is a significant improvement over EA’s loss of $135 million from last year, which was the result of poor sales.

The improvement is believed to be the result of cost cutting, and good sales for Sim 3 and other recent titles. I am personally happy to hear they are bouncing back. They have been one of the more creative publishers in the past few years. Whether their latest titles will do well enough to carry them into better numbers, we will have to wait and see. Brutal Legend, Dante’s Inferno, and Left 4 Dead 2 are just a few of the anticipated games.

Eric Schmidt resigns from Apple

Eric Schmidt Google CEO
In a decision that comes as little surprise, Eric Schmidt has resigned from Apple‘s board. Schmidt sat as a board member for Apple as well as Google, and due to the growing conflict between the two companies Apple felt best he resign. This decision comes shortly after the FCC made inquiries into why Apple denied the Google Voice application for its iPhone App Store.

“Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.”

Schmidt held his position at Apple since 2006, and many people believed that his resignation was inevitable. Apple and Google continue to compete within the Internet and mobile markets. From the search engine battle between Safari and Chrome, to the competition on the mobile front between the Apple iPhoneGoogle Android, the two companies have become major rivals. operating system and
