Sony’s fall and plans to return to former glory

Sony grand openeing
After launching a number of new stores in Japan, Sony has taken steps to returning to its former glory. The once dominant electronics giant has suffered some heavy blows of late. The launching of new stores, as well as new product lines are part of their initiative to regain their position as a top developer of consumer electronics.

Sony once had sure footing in a number of electronics markets with its PlayStation system and Walkman music players but has recently suffered from the rise of other popular electronics. In a NY Times article, analyst and author of the book “Sony’s SicknessAkihiko Jojima stated that “Sony once hit home runs, but now it’s lost its touch.”

The iPod has dominated digital music players (once Sony’s territory), while the PlayStation as well as the PSP have taken a back seat to the Nintendo Wii and DS. Sony is also being dominated in flat panel TV sales, with Samsung now leading the way in the market.

It has been a tough road for Sony but according to Sony senior vice president Yoshihisa Ishida, the company is poised for a rebound. Ishida stated “We will go on the offensive in 2010.” With the launching of a new line of 3D TV’s in June, as well as the work they are doing with Google for Google TV, the company is showing promise.

For the first time since the downturn in the economy Sony’s finances are finally improving. In the final quarter of 2009, Sony defied expectations with a sevenfold increase in profits to $853 million. That combined with the new initiatives the company is taking on, Sony is on its way to regaining ground amongst its competition.

Google may pull out of China on April 10

Google China Home

According to a report in a Beijing-based newspaper, Google intends to announce on Monday that it will be pulling out of China on April 10. The report comes from an unnamed source, who is said to be a sales associate for the search giant.

The unnamed source stated “I have received information saying that Google will leave China on April 10, but this information has not at present been confirmed by Google.” Google has not yet responded to these claims.

It was in January that Google announced that they will no longer censor their search results in China, even if it meant pulling out of the country entirely. What prompted this decision was a highly sophisticated attack that comprised a number of Gmail accounts of human rights activists. Google believes that the attack originated in China, although the government denies any involvement.

It seems that the shutting down of Google.cn is a very real possibility, as the Chinese government is refusing to budge on its censorship laws.

Mobile App market to skyrocket to $17.5 billion by 2012

Nexus One PhoneAccording to a study released today, the Mobile Apps market will skyrocket to $17.5 billion within 3 years. The study was commissioned by GetJar, an independent mobile phone application store who supplies mobile apps for Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile.

According to the report conducted by Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile app downloads should jump from 7 billion in 2009 to almost 50 billion by 2012. The report predicts that by that time the market will be worth $17.5 billion.

GetJar chief executive Ilja Laurs stated “It is easy to see how mobile apps will eclipse the traditional desktop Internet. It makes perfect sense that mobile devices will kill the desktop.” According to Laurs, 17% of GetJar users spend more time on Internet-linked mobile phones than they do on desktops.

Microsoft Back in the Brower Battle with IE9

Microsoft has unveiled a developer-centric release of its new browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9). With improved speed and HTML 5 support, IE9 could put Internet Explorer back in the browser race as a worthy competitor.

With IE9, Microsoft confronted complaints from users about poor browser speed and a lack of a support for new technology. The new browser will have increased support for such web technologies as HTML 5, CSS3, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), and XHTML parsing.  Not convinced yet? Totally understandable, considering the issues surrounding Microsoft’s browsers, like the Zero-Day Flaw.

IE9, however, already has the support from several analysts and corporations, including Nvidia. The new graphics subsystem in IE9, for example, has the graphics company buzzing with excitement, as taken from their blog post:

“Today, with introduction of Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft gives us another milestone for visual computing. Internet Explorer 9 includes a new JavaScript engine, support for HTML5 and hardware accelerated graphics and text. Internet Explorer 9 is the first browser designed to take advantage of modern hardware, resulting in graphics and performance improvements throughout the browser including the first to deliver hardware accelerated scalable vector graphics (SVG); the first to enhance JavaScript engine performance with the benefit of shifting from the CPU to the GPU; and the first to deliver GPU-Powered HTML5.”

Users attempting to download the early platform preview of IE9 should note that the browser does not support XP SP3 or Vista SP1. On Tuesday, general manager for IE development at Microsoft, Dean Hachamovich, detailed IE9′s performance enhancement during his presentation at MIX10. You can download and ‘test drive’ IE9 today from Microsoft’s IE Platform Preview Page.
