Google may pull out of China on April 10

According to a report in a Beijing-based newspaper, Google intends to announce on Monday that it will be pulling out of China on April 10. The report comes from an unnamed source, who is said to be a sales associate for the search giant.

The unnamed source stated “I have received information saying that Google will leave China on April 10, but this information has not at present been confirmed by Google.” Google has not yet responded to these claims.

It was in January that Google announced that they will no longer censor their search results in China, even if it meant pulling out of the country entirely. What prompted this decision was a highly sophisticated attack that comprised a number of Gmail accounts of human rights activists. Google believes that the attack originated in China, although the government denies any involvement.

It seems that the shutting down of Google.cn is a very real possibility, as the Chinese government is refusing to budge on its censorship laws.
