The Facebook Exodus

Facebook LogoThe growing number of concerns and distrust in Facebook’s privacy policies have reached critical mass, as today marks Quit Facebook Day. The event involves a portion of Facebook users who are banning together and stagging an official exodus from the site in protest.

The quit Facebook initiative was born weeks ago in response to the site’s questionable privacy policies. Concerns and frustration over Facebook’s less than transparent stance on user data has motivated many critics and users alike to quit the site.

So far only 30,000 are currently committed to quitting Facebook, a drop in the bucket compared to 400,000 users. The number, however, is continually growing and the Facebook exodus may be much more effective in sending a message about online privacy policy.

What do you think? Are you planning on quitting Facebook today? Is privacy one of your top concerns when joining a social media site? Let us know what you think.

Sony and Nokia looking into Foxconn suicides

Nokia LogoThe China based Hon Hai Precision Industries, or Foxconn as we know it, has garnered massive media attention of late over a string of employee suicides. Accusations of harsh conditions for the factory’s 450,000 employees continue to mount, which has motivated many of the factory’s clients to get involved.

Two major clients of Foxconn, Nokia and Sony, have both expressed concerns with the factory’s harsh employee conditions. Nokia stated “We are concerned and take this very seriously. Given the concerning reports regarding Foxconn, we are in continuous contact with Foxconn to ensure any issues are identified and addressed as soon as possible.”

Foxconn has been accused of harsh working conditions and even violence against employees in the past. The total number of employee suicides is reportedly 16, as reports indicate another attempt was made Friday.

According to the Wall Street Journal Hon Hai has decided to raise employee wages, although they claim that it has nothing to do with the suicides. Company spokesman Edmund Ding stated “It is not because of the suicides, the discussion has been going on for a long time.”

Yahoo and Nokia join forces to extend their services

Today Nokia announced that they and Yahoo will be extending their partnership to allow access of each other’s online services. Nokia will now have greater access to Yahoo’s email and chat services, and Yahoo will have access to Nokia’s map and navigation services.

Nokia and Yahoo execs

Delivering great user experiences — both online and on your mobile – is what this alliance is all about.

The deal builds on a five year partnership between the two companies, and will now extend their services to PC as well as mobile phone. Yahoo’s email and instant message services will be integrated into Nokia’s Ovis’ platform, and Nokia’s navigation services will power Yahoo maps.

The Details:

  • Nokia will be the exclusive, global provider of Yahoo’s maps and navigation services, integrating Ovi Maps across Yahoo properties, branded as “powered by Ovi.”
  • Yahoo will become the exclusive, global provider of Nokia’s Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services branded as “Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo”
  • Nokia and Yahoo plan to work on ID federation between their services, beginning by making it easy for people to use their Ovi user IDs across select Yahoo properties to easily access the online content and services they need.

Yahoo CEO, Carol Bartz stated “We’re excited to expand the reach of our best-in-class Mail and Messenger services, bringing personalized experiences to more people across the mobile web, particularly in emerging markets where we are seeding the next generation of Yahoo users.”

Facebook and other sites discovered sharing user data with advertisers

Keyboward lockAccording to the Wall Street Journal several social media sites, including Facebook and MySpace, have reportedly been sending user data without consent to advertisers. The data allows advertisers to look up the personal information of the users, that can include their name, age, hometown, and more.

The data was sent to several advertisers, which include Google’s DoubleClick and Yahoo’s Right Media. Both have stated that they were unaware of the fact that the data came from social media sites, and haven’t used it.

The list of sites that the Wall Street Journal identified (along with Facebook and MySpace) for sending the personal data to advertisers includes Hi5, Xanga and Digg. Among them Facebook was identified as sending the most personal data to advertisers.

The news couldn’t have come at a worse time for Facebook. The site is currently facing harsh criticism from privacy advocates. Its complicated and less than transparent privacy policy has many concerned.

After questioning from the WSJ, Facebook and MySpace both have rewritten their code for sending user information to advertisers. The damage, however, has already been done, as Facebook’s already tarnished reputation has taken yet another hard hit.

Adobe moving forward with HTML 5

Yesterday at the Google I/O conference, Adobe announced the release of the HTML 5 pack for designers and developers. The Adobe HTML 5 pack is available now via a free upgrade for Adobe Dreamweaver CS5. It will allow developers to create and publish content in HTML 5 language.

The announcement comes just days after Adobe released an ad campaign criticizing Apple for not allowing Flash on the iPhone or iPad devices. The ad was launched in response to an open letter from Steve Jobs, in which he laid out the reasons why Apple doesn’t like Flash. Jobs stated that “Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers.”

Since then Adobe has become a sort of advocate for HTML5, and are now beginning to incorporate it into their software. The “HTML5 pack” will offer a host of new features to Dreamweaver users. One of them includes hinting for HTML5 and CSS3 capabilities to allow use of new HTML5 tags. WebKit engine updates, and improvements for audio & video support in Dreamweaver CS5’s Live View are also included in the new edition.

Germany demands Google surrender stolen private data

internet securityLast week Google made a startling confession that they had been inadvertently collecting private data from unsecured home WiFi Networks through the Street View car. According to the NY Times the search giant is under pressure from a German regulator to turn over a hard drive of the data collected while in Germany or face legal action.

A data protection supervisor for the city-state of Hamburg, Johannes Caspar stated that Google had until May 26 to hand over a hard drive of the stolen data that had been picked up in Germany or face legal action.

Through a spokesperson Google reiterated the stance it had taken on the companies blog, in that they will destroy any stolen WLAN data but will not hand over a hard drive. The European justice commissioner, Viviane Reding stated “It is not acceptable that a company operating in the E.U. does not respect E.U. Rules.”

Google has taken steps to ensure that all stolen WLAN data is being disposed of properly. They are currently working with the Data Protection Authorities (DPA) in various countries, and are even going so far as involving a third party to be witnesses of proper disposal. Will that be enough for German authorities? Time will tell.

Google has stated the cause of the the collection of private WLAN data was an engineering flaw.
