Sony and Nokia looking into Foxconn suicides

Nokia LogoThe China based Hon Hai Precision Industries, or Foxconn as we know it, has garnered massive media attention of late over a string of employee suicides. Accusations of harsh conditions for the factory’s 450,000 employees continue to mount, which has motivated many of the factory’s clients to get involved.

Two major clients of Foxconn, Nokia and Sony, have both expressed concerns with the factory’s harsh employee conditions. Nokia stated “We are concerned and take this very seriously. Given the concerning reports regarding Foxconn, we are in continuous contact with Foxconn to ensure any issues are identified and addressed as soon as possible.”

Foxconn has been accused of harsh working conditions and even violence against employees in the past. The total number of employee suicides is reportedly 16, as reports indicate another attempt was made Friday.

According to the Wall Street Journal Hon Hai has decided to raise employee wages, although they claim that it has nothing to do with the suicides. Company spokesman Edmund Ding stated “It is not because of the suicides, the discussion has been going on for a long time.”
