Motorola Pokes Fun at iPhone 4 Reception with Latest Droid X Ad

Motorola ad
It is no secret that Apple is suffering some harsh criticism over the iPhone 4 antenna flaw that so many owners are currently experiencing.  The issue has, of late, become one of the biggest bits of tech news currently discussed and Motorola is taking full advantage of it.

Poking fun at Apple’s solution for the iPhone 4′s antenna flaw, the latest Droid X ad reads, “No Jacket Required.” It first appeared on Motorola’s Facebook page yesterday, but according to Gizmodo, it was featured in the NY Times this morning.

Motorola doesn’t hold anything back in the ad, stating that, “We believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly,” and, “…that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.” Ouch.

Full statement:

“At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly. That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket. For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.”

Apple will most likely release an ad in retort, or Steve Jobs will put out a five page letter on his thoughts. In either case, we will be sure to keep you updated.

White iPhone 4 Delayed, Again

Apple has just announced that the white iPhone 4 release date is being pushed back yet again. This the second time that Apple has delayed the release of the coveted white iPhone 4, originally stating it would be released near the end of this July.

Apple is now projecting the release of the White iPhone 4 for some time later this year, stating that, “Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected.”

There is a possibility that the reason Apple is finding the iPhone 4 manufacturing process so “challenging” is because they have plans to adjust the phone’s antenna, so as to avoid the same issue that so many black iPhone 4s are currently experiencing.

Although this is (in my opinion) the least of Apple’s worries right now, it is no-less disheartening to Apple fans.  Look on the bright side though, if my theory is correct, there may very well be a white iPhone 4 available for purchase free of antenna drama. You will just have to wait till the end of the year to purchase one.

IBM to Usher in New Era of Mainframes with zEnterprise System

Today IBM is pioneering a new age of mainframes with the announcement of the zEnterprise mainframe server. The zEnterprise system, the most powerful and energy-efficient mainframe to date, will be the first mainframe of its kind with the ability to be managed as a single system.

The zEnterprise mainframe represents an investment of more than $1.5 billion by IBM R&D and more than three years of collaboration with some of IBM’s top clients.

The motivations that started development of the zEnterprise mainframe server was to create a simple mainframe system that can work seamlessly and manage workloads over various systems as one. Using IBM system software known as the “Unified Resource Manager,” some 100,000 servers can be managed as a single system on a zEnterprise mainframe.

The zEnterprise system, or “zEnterprise 196,” contains 96 of the world’s most powerful microprocessors running at 5.2Ghz, able to executing more than 50 billion (BIPs) instructions per second. Tom Rosamilia, General Manager, IBM Power and z Systems, stated, “The new mainframe is the fastest enterprise server in the world and represents a giant leap forward in performance.”

With the zEnterprise mainframe, IBM hopes to present a new and simplified way to manage mainframe systems for corporations. Its simple integration of other mainframe systems and scalability may just be what growing IT departments have been waiting for.

Facebook Controversy Has Not Stalled its Growth

FB logoToday Facebook has officially announced that it has surpassed the 500 million user mark. In a blog post from Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook CEO expressed his appreciation, stating, “This is an important milestone for all of you who have helped spread Facebook around the world. Now a lot more people have the opportunity to stay connected with the people they care about.”

Although Facebook has been the center of controversy for months now, it seems to have not hindered its growth. According to the LA Times, many industry watchers believe that Facebook still has many more milestones ahead of it. Some are even going so far as to mention the possibility of a 1 billion user mark for the site in the future, citing Facebook’s international growth.

Facebook has suffered harsh criticism as of late over its stance on privacy, and it has even sparked various initiatives against the site, all of which have been somewhat ineffective. You might remember the “Quit Facebook Day” initiative that took place in May. Although the effort received a good amount of buzz, it fell flat, garnering only some 37,000 users committing to quit the site.

Mark Zuckerbeg himself has become increasingly controversial, based on his privacy agenda and questionable past. There is evidence that Zuckerberg hacked the email accounts of his competitors to discredit them, and even launched Facebook under false pretense. The controversy over this evidence is so startling that a film is even being made, known as “The Social Network.”

Whether or not the growing controversy over Facebook will cause a significant enough drop in user loyalty remains to be seen. At this point Facebook seems much like a juggernaut; however, if the site does not make their privacy policies more transparent in the future, they may take a significant hit.
