Droid X Hits Verizon Stores

Droid X

Today, Verizon announced that the Droid’s big brother, Droid X, is now available at Verizon Stores.  Midnight openings at Verizon stores across the country saw crowds in the hundreds, waiting to be first to purchase the newest Android phone.

The Droid X may be the finest Android phone thus far from the Droid Line. It features a 4.3 inch screen, dual-flash 8 MP camera, and an HDMI port. Although the phone will be released with Android 2.1, you will be able to get Android 2.2, as well as Adobe Flash 10.1 with an over-the-air update.

The Droid X is the largest of the Droid phones, and although it makes it a bit more cumbersome, it is ideal for viewing video.  Blockbuster on demand is available for the phone via V Cast so you can catch up on your Burn Notice episodes (yay)!

The Droid X is going for $199.99 after $100 mail-in-rebate and a two year contract.

Consumer Reports Can’t Recommend the iPhone 4

iPhone 4
We have all been aware of the reception issues iPhone 4 owners are experiencing, but today marks the first results of any real testing of the issue. Consumer Reports confirmed what many had already been aware of, that the iPhone 4 suffers a significant loss in reception when a portion of its metal band is touched.

Consumer Reports tested the iPhone 4, along with the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre within their own radio frequency isolation chamber. The results showed that the iPhone 4 was the only phone among the three to suffer a signal loss. The results prove what many iPhone 4 owners have been experiencing, and more importantly directly contradicts Apple’s prognosis, which pegs the problem as a display glitch.

Consumer Reports addressed the fact that their results were different from Apple’s, stating that, “Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4′s signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software.”

If you are considering purchasing an iPhone 4, you may want to wait until Apple decides to remedy the issue or at least offer a solution. Consumer Reports stated that due to the signal issue with the phone, “… we can’t recommend the iPhone 4.” However, if you have already purchased the iPhone 4, you can remedy the issue by covering the antenna with a piece of tape or using a protective case.

Miracles Can Happen, China Renews Google’s ICP License

Google China
For months now the future of Google China has been in serious question due to a conflict between Google and the Chinese Government. Today, the first rays of hope for Google.cn have appeared in the form of an update to the Google Blog, stating that China renewed Google’s ICP license to operate in their country.

Google’s Chief Legal Officer David Drummond stated, “We are very pleased that the government has renewed our ICP license and we look forward to continuing to provide web search and local products to our users in China.”

Google and the Chinese Government have been in a sort of standoff that has spanned months. There had been tension between the two for some time, but it became serious in January when Google stated that they would no longer censor content for Google China, and cast suspicion on the Chinese Government over a cyber attack they had suffered months prior. China’s stance was as equally firm as Google’s. Chinese officials stated that Google would not be allowed to operate in their country if they did not obey their laws.

There was little hope that Google and China could reach a resolution over Google.cn, but the ICP renewal is a very positive sign. Although there is certain to be a fair amount of negotiations down the road, it seems the two have reached an agreement.

Apple responds to iPhone 4 owner complaints

iphone 4
There is no argument that the iPhone 4 is an overwhelming commercial success but numerous hardware issues with the device have cropped up. One of the major issues that iPhone 4 owners are having is a drastic drop in signal strength when touching an area of the phone’s metal band. Today Apple has responded to the issue and their solution may not be what iPhone 4 owners were hoping for.

In a press release, Apple addressed the iPhone 4 reception issue by claiming it simply doesn’t exist. The cause of the drop in bars when touching the phone’s metal band was blamed on a display malfunction, which is showing an incorrect number of bars.

Apple will be issuing a software update to fix the phone’s display but it seems it will only be making the display for signal strength more accurate, rather than addressing the issue of signal strength itself. Owners will continue to lose their signal strength when touching the phone’s metal band; the software update will only display the loss more accurately.

Apple said in a roundabout way that the phone doesn’t have an issue with reception; stating that “the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped.”
