Skype Wants into your Corporate Office

In an effort to incorporate their services into corporate offices, Skype has announced a strategic partnership with Avaya, a leading seller of corporate phone systems. The deal will heavily incorporate Skype services into Avaya phone systems for improving communications between employees, as well as employees and customers.

The first phase of the deal will allow Avaya customers in the US to access Skype Connect for Skype calls between IP based phone systems. The second phase of the deal, which is set to launch in the second half of 2011, will allow companies to use instant messaging, video chat, and other Skype tools.

Vice President and GM of Skype for Business, David Gurlé stated, “We believe our integrated solution in the second half of 2011 is expected to offer the benefits of Skype to a growing number of businesses and open up new ways for people to communicate and collaborate.”

The major motivation for companies to look to Avaya/Skype services is that it will help reduce phone bills. Employees can make Skype calls via computer to customers for a low cost or no cost at all. Inbound calls to companies can also be routed online with the use of a Skype button on their sites.

AOL Acquires Tech Crunch

In an effort to establish themselves as one of the top providers of tech based content online, AOL has announce that they will be acquiring tech news site TechCrunch. While the site will retain its editorial freedom, TechCrunch and all of its divisions will soon become part of AOL’s network of news sites.

Chairman and CEO of AOL, Tim Armstrong stated, “TechCrunch and its team will be an outstanding addition to the high-quality content on the AOL Technology Network.”

Founder and Co-Editor of TechCrunch, Michael Arrington, stated, “Tim Armstrong and his team have an exciting vision for the future of AOL as a global leader in creating and delivering world-class content to consumers.”

Further establishing themselves as a first class tech-centric content provider, TechCrunch will soon be joining the likes of Engadget and becoming part of AOL’s network of sites. While sites like Engadget and Joystiq are impressive in and of themselves, TechCrunch will undoubtedly become the crowned jewel of the AOL Network. Absorbing the rights to not only the site but its divisions and worldwide events, AOL will become more a part of the tech community and zeitgeist than ever before.

Although AOL has hinted at some of their intentions for TechCrunch, the terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

U.S. Pushing Legislation for Internet Wiretaps

In hopes of better tracking criminals and terrorists online, the Obama Administration is pushing sweeping internet legislation. The proposal would require social networking sites, as well as voice-over-Internet service providers to create technology that would allow law enforcement agencies to monitor any users suspected of criminal or terrorist activity.

Considering that people are more apt to communicate over social networks as opposed to phone lines, federal law enforcement agencies are somewhat in the dark.  The new legislation, which government officials hope to submit to lawmakers next year, is being developed to bring law enforcement agencies up to speed on more modern forms of communications.

The new legislation, if passed, will grant law enforcement agencies the authority to essentially tap any online and or internet based voice service. That includes internet chat programs, peer-to-peer messaging, and encrypted email messages.

The Communications Assistance to Law Enforcement Act (or CALEA), which was passed in 1994, requires phone companies to provide an avenue for law enforcement agencies to monitor calls with a court order. The CALEA, however, does not apply to the social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, which is what has motivated the White House to work on new legislation.

The new legislation raises concerns over online privacy, as well as whether or not online service providers are even capable of meeting the demands of the new legislation. Vice President of the Center for Democracy and Technology, James X. Dempse,y said to the NY Times that, “They basically want to turn back the clock and make Internet services function the way that the telephone system used to function.”

The legislative plan is still in development, but whether it will be edited to better meet requirements of online service providers is unclear.

Blockbuster Files for Bankruptcy

BlockbusterIt has been a long, hard road for Blockbuster, but today marks a particularly low point for the company. In hopes of reducing their massive debt, Blockbuster has announced that they will be filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Chairman and CEO, Jim Keyes stated, “After a careful and thorough analysis, we determined that the process announced today provides the optimal path for recapitalizing our balance sheet and positioning Blockbuster for the future as we continue to transform our business model to meet the evolving preferences of our customers.”

Referring to the proceedings as a “pre-arranged recapitalization,” Blockbuster plans to reduce their now $1 billion dollar debt to $100 million or less. The filing will not apply to any of Blockbuster’s international operations, only US based stores and services will be affected.

Blockbuster stated that their stores will continue to operate, with all 3,000 of them remaining open. The companies DVD vending kiosks, by-mail and digital services will also continue to operate as normal.

Blockbuster has been hit hard by the rise of rental-kiosks and streaming services such as Netflix.  The company has implemented numerous new initiatives, the most recent a video game by mail service, but has gained little traction.

Twitter Set for a Revamp

This week Twitter made a major announcement, in that it will be undergoing a bit of an overhaul. This will mark the first major revamp for the site since its launch in 2006. Announced on the Twitter Blog, CEO Evan Williams laid out what the updates to the micro-blogging site will be.

There are a variety of new changes that will come with the new Twitter, some of which are subject to change. The biggest change will without a doubt be the fact that Tweets will no longer be confined to just 140 characters and a link.

Through partnerships with DailyBooth, deviantART, Etsy, Flickr, and many others, you will now be able to attach media to any and all of your tweets. All of your media attachments will be collapsed within the Tweet but will expand once clicked.

Revamp includes:

  • New design – The site has a cleaner timeline and a rich details pane that instantly adds more impact to individual Tweets
  • MediaEmbed photos and videos directly on Twitter, thanks to partnerships with DailyBooth, deviantART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog, and YouTube
  • Related contentWhen you click a Tweet, the details pane shows additional information related to the author or subject
  • Mini profiles – Click a username to see a mini profile without navigating away from the page

Twitter will be rolling out a preview for a tiny group of users, but the official switch has not yet been announced.
