This week Twitter made a major announcement, in that it will be undergoing a bit of an overhaul. This will mark the first major revamp for the site since its launch in 2006. Announced on the Twitter Blog, CEO Evan Williams laid out what the updates to the micro-blogging site will be.
There are a variety of new changes that will come with the new Twitter, some of which are subject to change. The biggest change will without a doubt be the fact that Tweets will no longer be confined to just 140 characters and a link.
Through partnerships with DailyBooth, deviantART, Etsy, Flickr, and many others, you will now be able to attach media to any and all of your tweets. All of your media attachments will be collapsed within the Tweet but will expand once clicked.
Revamp includes:
- New design – The site has a cleaner timeline and a rich details pane that instantly adds more impact to individual Tweets
- Media – Embed photos and videos directly on Twitter, thanks to partnerships with DailyBooth, deviantART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog, and YouTube
- Related content – When you click a Tweet, the details pane shows additional information related to the author or subject
- Mini profiles – Click a username to see a mini profile without navigating away from the page
Twitter will be rolling out a preview for a tiny group of users, but the official switch has not yet been announced.
