Developers get their hands on Mango

While Microsoft announced the first major update to its Windows Phone more than a month ago, the software giant is finally giving developers a chance to give the OS a drive with its second round of beta testing.

Brandon Watson, Microsoft’s senior director of developer experience for Windows Phone, recently stated that early reviews of Mango have shown that it “dramatically enhances the core experiences that we all rely on our phones for every day.” And with the new beta version, the company is looking to make it easy for developers to build new apps for WP7.

Watson added that college students will be brought into the mix. He said that 50 Mango developer phones have been set aside for student developers. Students need to register on DreamSpark. Then, Microsoft will select the best prototypes and send developer handsets to the students.

The first of the Mango-powered phones are expected to arrive this fall and will eventually include devices from Acer, ZTE, Samsung and others. Nokia is also expected to launch a Mango phone this year as the first of its new partnership with Microsoft.
