eReader, tablet adoption increasing in US

A new study from the Pew Internet Project found that, while both eReaders and tablets are on the rise, the former is moving at a faster pace.

According to the research firm, 12 percent of American adults owned eReaders, such as the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes & Noble Nook, as of this May, while just 8 percent of Americans owned tablets at this time.

However, the ownership of both eReaders and tablets has grown, increasing from 6 percent and 5 percent of adults, respectively, since last November.

Despite this growth, both devices represent relatively small portions of the consumer electronics market. According to the report, mobile phones are by far the most popular consumer technology devices, with 83 percent of Americans owning one. This is followed by desktop and laptop computers, with 57 percent and 56 percent of ownership, respectively.

Going forward, Apple is expected to continue dominating the tablet market. However, its market share will likely slip during the next few years. According to recent figures from Gartner, Apple’s market share will slip from 83.9 percent in 2010 to 47.1 percent in 2015.
