Nintendoflix 3DS: Netflix available for 3DS users today

Today is the day where all owners of the hand-held 3DS in Canada and North America can, if they wish, switch over from game mode into movie mode. And like other mobile Netflix apps, the download itself will be free for 3DS users on Ninendo’s eShop, but in order to actually run the app, users must have a registered Netflix account. Unfortunately, even with the 3DS’ 3D capabilities, movies are not able to be viewed in 3D… yet. 3DS users will soon have access to a select library of 3D movies.

This is great news for 3DS gamers who frequent Wi-Fi hotspots in their travels at places like airports, restaurants, and coffee shops. Nintendo is even working with AT&T to provide all 3DS users with free Wi-Fi access with their SpotPass.

3DS users with both a Wii and 3DS system can even stop a movie to pick up where they left off on both systems interchangeably. So if a Wii user was watching a movie and had to leave unexpectedly, the portable 3DS would be able to start the movie where the Wii stream stopped last.

So until 3DS and Netflix release 3D movies, Nintendo 3DS users must settle for portable 2D viewing on their device. Soon enough 3D movie-watching will hit the 3DS, letting people enjoy 3D movies, sans the dorky glasses.
