PSN once again available in Japan

Sony’s embarrassing data breach saga may be coming to a close, as the company has finally brought its PlayStation Network back online in Japan.

PSN logoIt’s been more than two months since Sony announced it was taking the PlayStation Network offline following a highly publicized hacking incident. And while many regions of the world have had access to the network for some time, government officials in Japan chose to hold out until Sony could prove it was capable of protecting consumer data.

Of course, Sony followed up that development by suffering data breaches to its website SonyPictures.com, its subsidiary So-net and a number of other networks. Upon relaunching the PSN, a problem was also quickly discovered with the service’s login page.

In total more than 100 million accounts were affected by the breach. In its earnings forecast, Sony estimated the incident would cost it nearly $171 million – a figure that does not account for possible legal fees.

Nevertheless, here we are – a world once again reunited in the common cause of spending countless hours enjoying the company of fellow gamers from around the word. Here’s to hoping it’s here to stay this time.
