Smartphone owners gotta have those games

It’s no secret that the rise of smartphones ushered in a new era of gaming, but a recent Nielsen report confirmed that games continue to be the most popular mobile applications in the United States.

According to the market research firm, 64 percent of app downloaders have used a gaming app within the last 30 days. This puts gaming on top of all other categories, including weather, social networking, maps and navigation and music – which rounded out the top five.

Furthermore, the study revealed that those of us unwilling to fork over the $0.99 for a full version of the Oregon Trail are apparently in the minority, as 93 percent of app downloaders said they were willing to pay for mobile games.

The study also revealed that iPhone users, above all others, are the most addicted to their games. iOS gamers, the report found, spend 14.7 hours each month playing games. That is nearly twice the industry average of 7.8 hours and significantly more than the 9.3 hours Android users spend playing games.

A separate study from Flurry Analytics found not only games, but apps in general, are on the rise. According to that study, American smartphone owners spend an average of 81 minutes accessing mobile apps each day.
