Gartner report highlights hype behind tablets

According to the most recent Hype Cycle Special Report from research firm Gartner, tablets are only about two to five years away from mainstream adoption.

Now, as Public Enemy has told us, it’s rarely wise to believe the hype. But given Gartner’s track record, we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt on this one. According to the research firm, media tablets are joined by cloud computing, quick response codes and speech recognition as being two to five years from the mainstream.

Of course, tablets first started garnering significant enthusiasm last year with the introduction of the iPad from Apple. Since then, a multitude of tablets have hit the market from manufacturers across the board.

Going forward, the introduction of more tablets from various others, coupled with the expanded capabilities of the devices, will continue to drive adoption.

Gartner has also predicted that nearly 70 million tablets will ship this year. However, by 2015, the research firm said it expects almost 300 million tablets to sell worldwide.
