QNX-based smartphone from RIM rumored for 2012 release

The BlackBerry OS has been Research In Motion’s bread and butter for some time. But now, as the company struggles to stay abreast in the smartphone market, RIM has decided to reshuffle the deck and turn the page on its mobile software.

According to a recent report from BGR.com, RIM will release its first QNX-based smartphone, the BlackBerry Colt, in the first quarter of next year. The smartphone will be the beginning of the end for the tried and true BlackBerry OS.

RIM has yet to confirm the rumors of the BlackBerry Colt, but, as MSN reported, the company has hinted that such a development is in the works. For example, earlier this year, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis stated that his company’s upcoming tablets would run on the QNX mobile OS as well.

According to reports, the BlackBerry Colt is expected to include a single-core processor, which seems like a curious move in an era of dual- and quad-core chips. However, as BGR pointed out, this may change during the internal testing process.

RIM’s struggles in the smartphone market have been ongoing for sometime and recently came to a head when the company announced it would cut 2,000 employees from its payroll. According to a Reuters report, this represents 11 percent of the company’s workforce.
