Smartphones continue to gain ground in mobile market

Changes are afoot in the mobile device market, and, as a new report from Gartner shows, they seem to be happening at breakneck speeds.

According to the research firm’s latest mobile device report, smartphones accounted for one-fourth of all mobile phone sales during the second quarter of 2011. This should surprise only a few, as the next-generation handsets have been among the most talked-about technologies of the last decade.

What is impressive is the rate at which smartphones grew in the last year. Gartner estimated that smartphone sales increased by a healthy 74 percent year-over-year during the second quarter of 2011. This was good for more than 107.7 million units sold.

Furthermore, Google’s Android widened its lead in the quarter, increasing its market share from 17.2 percent during the second quarter of 2010 to 43.4 percent in 2011. Its nearest competitor, at 22.1 percent, was Nokia’s Symbian.

Moving forward, smartphones are expected to continue gaining ground. As a recent IDC report shows, smartphone sales will reach 982 million by 2015.
