For 26 years, Reading Rainbow made books an adventure, with animated storytelling and teasers of books presented by the show’s young reading enthusiasts. Though the show was cut due to lack of funding, executive producer and host LeVar Burton intends to bring Reading Rainbow back to life – with a digital upgrade.
The first step in his plan is a mobile app that will focus on the books themselves – “lightly enhanced digital books for children.” But that won’t be the end of the Reading Rainbow recovery as Burton sees it. He hopes that the new app format, followed by “DVDs and streaming of classic Reading Rainbow episodes,” will bring a joy of reading to a “wired generation.”
