iPad III coming soon!

People have been predicting Apple would release the iPad 3 sometime in the next month or so, and what better time than near the one year anniversary of the iPad 2?

A San Francisco event (no specific timing has been set) will debut the latest tablet sometime in the first week of March (last year Apple released the 2 on March 11), and All Things D confirms inside sources say the rumors have pretty much lived up to what the iPad 3 will feature— a 2048×1536 Retina Display (or possibly something relatively closer) and chip speeds running supposedly 4-5x faster than the 2; visually, the design will remain similar to the 2, and will of course come with complimentary Siri voice control.

iPad 3 News reported The Repair Labs at Fix-iPhones.com announced they had gotten their hands on the iPad 3 back panels, which “created a large buzz about the iPad 3 design and features.” The mount appears “very different and smaller than the current mount used in the iPad 2[,] [...] suggest[ing] that there is definitely going to be a change in the processor in the iPad 3.”

Much success will attribute to the iPad 3, and with Apple’s $13.6 billion profit earning in Q1, these numbers are predicted to continue trailing upward in Q2.

YouTube earns higher ranking than Facebook and other social media outlets in survey

The research firm Harris Interactive just released the results of its 2012 Harris Poll Youth Equitrend study, an examination of the popularity of various social media services among U.S. youth aged 13 to 24. In a result that has surprised some, YouTube earned the top rankings in this survey, beating Facebook and other popular sites in this category.

To determine the results of the Youth EquiTrend poll, Harris Interactive’s analysts examine respondents’ familiarity and satisfaction with various social media outlets. It also awards the “Brand of the Year” honor to the highest-ranking services, and this award went to YouTube in its category.

Regina A. Corso, senior vice president for Youth and Education Research at Harris Interactive, commented on YouTube’s advantage among youth.

“For many teens and young adults, the allure of Facebook is still there, but YouTube has become an alternative media outlet,” she said. “This is something that marketers should remember when creating their social media strategies.”

Recently, the Boston Globe reported that Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg returned to Harvard University to recruit young people with fresh new ideas for the website.

Prospective iPhone 5 buyers and iPhone 4 owners anxiously wait for what’s in store

Rumors have been circulating and information is slowly being released about what Apple lovers have to look forward to this fall regarding the iPhone 5. The release date still is unofficial, but people can expect to see the iPhone 5 on the market sometime late this September.

On June 6, Jobs announced at the World Wide Developers Conference that “[r]ight now [Apple is] very focused and excited about bringing iOS 5 and iCloud to our users this fall,” which is taking longer than expected, leaving people left with no trace of the iPhone 5’s confirmed release date.

Built into the iOS 5 is the iCloud feature, among 200 new features Apple is said to have added to the upgrade. The iCloud integrates users’ apps, documents, music, etc. into one “cloud,” enabling a wireless transfer between Apple devices. So if a user wanted to download a song on their iPad, the same song can transfer effortlessly to an iPhone.

Other rumors about the iPhone 5 include a supposed keyboard feature, 8 megapixel improved flash camera with a panoramic shot option, a curved glass screen for privacy, a faster 1.5 GHz dual core A5 processor chip that is used in the iPad, and its expansion to other carriers such as T-Mobile and Sprint.

The iPhone 5 release is expected to blow up the already booming Apple market that reported 142% growth in iPhone sales from the past year’s 3rd quarter, and a record net 3rd quarterly profit of $3.25 billion.

Will Streaming Services Replace Traditional TV?

You may not be ready to replace your cable/satellite service provider with a streaming service provider, but you have most likely considered it. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu Plus, more and more American families are streaming their favorite TV shows and movies. Does that, however, mean streaming services are poised to overtake traditional ones?

It is easy to see the draw of switching entirely from a traditional TV provider to a streaming service. A variety of them allow you to stream full seasons of television shows and feature length films to your computer, mobile device, or game console. Add the fact that monthly charges for such services run $10 or less, people must be switching to streaming services in spades, right?

HUlu IphoneThe truth is that only a small portion of Americans have given up cable entirely. According to a NY Times poll, 88 percent of Americans still use a cable/satellite service.  If streaming services are set at lower prices than traditional TV service providers, why are the vast majority of Americans clinging to them?

There are a variety of reasons that Americans are sticking with traditional TV service providers. The greatest reason, however, is that streaming services are still in their infancy, and are not able to offer the range of programming that major cable/satellite services can provide.  There are currently a number of TV shows and sporting events that are legally not allowed to be seen online.

Services like Netflix and Boxee are being used by many families as a secondary service to their traditional TV service provider. My parents, for example, use Netflix along with their satellite service. There are certain shows that they are not able to keep up on with Netflix, because it doesn’t provide current seasons or doesn’t have them at all. That is the same reason that many families are more inclined to use both a traditional and streaming service as opposed to just one or the other.

At this point the vast majority of Americans are not quite ready to give up their 250 channels for any single streaming service. Until streaming service providers are able to expand their libraries and include more of the shows people are watching, I believe they will only remain as an afterthought to American TV watchers.

7 Must Have Apps for Bloggers on the Go

touch pad

During the time I have spent at different conferences, I learned quickly that keeping track of your blog and social sites is nearly impossible to do on show floors. Thankfully, there is a small arsenal of mobile apps that are not only helpful, but essential to help you keep track of everything during these times. Here are 7 must have apps for bloggers on the go.

Seesmic
Seesmic appYou could go through the hassle of downloading the mobile apps for each of your social media accounts and update each at a time, or you can just get Seesmic and update all of them at once. Using Ping.fm support, Seesmic will allow you to update up to 50 total social sites simultaneously, making it the best mobile app for creating updates from your blog on the go.

Tweetie
Tweetie AppAlthough Seesmic is perfect for doing quick updates to multiple social sites, Tweetie is much better for in-depth managing of your Twitter account on the go.  It will basically allow you to use Twitter as you would from home. You can check DMs, as well as send images and video from your mobile device.

WordPress
WordPress AppEssential for WordPress bloggers, the WordPress mobile app will help you to manage your blog anywhere. You will be able to moderate comments, edit posts, and create pages from your device using the app. Although I wouldn’t recommend doing an entire post from your phone, the WordPress app is great for making quick edits to a post from your device.

iBlogger
iBlogger AppIf, by chance, you do not use WordPress, than iBlogger is the app for you. It is compatible with almost any type of blog there is, including ExpressionEngine, MovableType, and TypePad.  You will be able to create posts from your device as you would from home, with little to no restrictions. It’s perfect for making quick blurbs in a rush.

The app lets you create text, photo, and audio notes for keeping all of your news organized.  All of your notes will also include geo-location info and mapping for search.

Pingdom
PingDomIt’s always good to know if your site is encountering errors, especially during times of high traffic. The Pingdom app is perfect for doing that, as it will send alerts with detailed information whenever your site is down.

Pixelpipe
PixelPipePhoto editing is a valuable tool for posting almost any type of content. The only problem is that there is little you can do to edit photos from a mobile device.  With Pixelpipe you have the ability to reduce the resolution of any image on your phone during the upload, you than can share it on your favorite social media sites and upload it to your blog. As far as blogging goes with Pixelpipe, it is compatible with Blogger, TypePad, WordPress, and tumbler just to name a few.

Sony Reports Manufacturing Cost of PS3 Down 70%

A month ago, the CEO of Activision, Bobby Kotick, complained about the high cost of Sony’s PlayStation 3. Kotick’s threat to Sony, to lower the price of the PS3 or Activision stops making games for the console, is covered here.

Yesterday, in an investor call, Sony CEO Nobuyuki Oneda revealed that manufacturing costs of the PS3 are down by 70%.

Sony reported the company’s first annual loss in 14 years when it released its fiscal first quarter earnings yesterday. Further, the company is projecting over a $1 billion loss through March 2010. Sony may be blaming poor sales on the state of the economy, but people like Bobby Kotick would be sure to argue the price of the PS3 is to blame.

Why does Sony’s PS3 cost so much?

The cost of manufacturing each console is roughly $800. The price to buy a PS3? $399. While it may be the highest priced console against its competitors, Microsoft’s Xbox and the Nintendo Wii, Sony is taking a hit for every PS3 sold.

Sony saw some relief in January when it announced that the cost of manufacturing had dropped by 35% to $450. Though a 70% drop in cost seems to be just what the company needs, which would allow, as rumored, Sony to drop the price of the PS3. But will Sony really want to eat into its new profits, especially after a first quarter in the red and a poor outlook for the rest of the fiscal year?

Microsoft Rumored to Sell Windows 7 OS on Flash Drives

CNET has a source claiming that Microsoft may decide to make life easier for Netbook users anxious to upgrade to Windows 7.

Since debuting its new operating system last fall, Microsoft has often advertised Win 7 on Netbooks. But for owners of machines that are missing CD/DVD drives, installing the operating system is no small feat.

The solution?

Windows 7 operating system loaded and sold on a flash drive, allowing usually disadvantaged Netbook users to easily upgrade their machines.

Sprint foresees a Palm Pre Shortage

Sprint is gearing up for the big release of their latest iteration of the palm phone, the Palm Pre. Hitting the shelves June 6, Sprint is expecting the smart phone to sell well. In fact they are expecting the smart phone to sell out.

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has stated that they are worried about keeping up with the demand for the new Palm Pre.  At a recent tech conference Dan Hesse said “We don’t intend to advertise it heavily early on because we think we are going to have shortages for awhile.” He also went on to say “We won’t be able to keep up with demand for the device in the early period of time.”

It’s rumored that Sprint has less than 400,000 units of the smart phone available for its launch.  That is a pretty small number for a major launch, and that is the primary reason why people are expecting a sell out.

The Palm Pre arrives June 6, at a price of $199.

New Prototype Full Cinematic Trailer

In this full cinematic trailer, you get a glimpse of the dark world of Prototype.  Based in New York, the opening of this game shows a tactical team gunning down some type of mutant riot group that’s chasing a young woman.  After annihilating the mutants, the tactical team decides to go ahead and kill the girl that they just rescued from them.  Nice huh?  I am guessing they killed her because they were worried about her being contaminated by the mutants.  That is when the game’s protagonist Alex Mercer shows up and goes postal.

I found out about another one of Alex’s abilities in this trailer, that I was previously clueless about.  Alex is able to shape shift and take on the form of other people.  One scene in particular, Alex takes the form of a tactical agent to fool one of his pals, and then dispenses of him.

Prototype will be released June 9 for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Will Call of Duty 7 be in Vietnam?

Despite the fact Modern Warfare 2 has not been released yet, the Call of Duty 7 rumors have already begun to spread.  Yesterday TVGB heard from a reliable source that Activision is trying to license music that sounds like it’s out of the Vietnam era; leading some to believe that the next COD game could be based in Vietnam.

Another reason some are assuming COD 7 will be in Vietnam is due to that fact that the franchise has taken a step back from doing WW II style games.  World at War producer Noah Heller, has stated they “are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theatre and that lets us put a close to the war.  I’m sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come and World War II is a very classic war.  But we’re happy that we put the war to bed.”

Modern Warfare 2 is expected for release November 10, 2009.  As far as COD 7 goes we will have to wait and see.
