Blizzard’s Mystery Beta

Good news for anyone who attended BlizzCon last year.  If you kept the card you received with the beta test key, you will be able to access that beta today.  You are most likely shouting obscenities by now if you were one of the people that lost your card.

Although at this point it is a mystery as to what the beta is, some suspect it will be for StarCraft 2.  Since it is due for release soon.  StarCraft 2 will be sold as a 3 part series.  The first part Wings of Liberty, will be released around the end of this year.  It is said to “include a lengthy single-player campaign that focuses on the terrans and puts players in the role of Jim Raynor, one of the series’ main heroes.”

For those you who lost your cards, the end of the year can not come soon enough!

Guild Wars top 6 million

Rah rah, hooray, and any other type of hearty congratulations I can muster.  NCsoft‘s successful Guild Wars has now sold over 6 million units. The news could not have come at a better time, as Guild Wars is approaching its 4th anniversary.

“We are humbled by how gamers have responded to Guild Wars over the past four years, and we are proud that the game and its community have helped to continually shape, define, and expand the genre,” said ArenaNet studio head Mike O’Brien. “Our subscription-free business model has proven to be a big hit with gamers, bringing an enormous and diverse online community to the game.”

The official date of Guild War’s 4th birthday is April 28th, and there will be in game festivities going on all over.  Until then ArenaNet has release some content early for all of their faithful fans.  Including new quest content, storage options, and a few other things.  Congrats and way to go on this milestone! ^_^

Curt Schilling retires from Baseball and starts new carrier in gaming

Baseball Legend, and Boston native Curt Schilling has officially announced his retirement this week from America’s pass time. Moving on to other endeavors, it seems Schilling will be putting his time into his video game company 38 Studios.  Founded in late 2006, 38 Studios is currently working on an MMO title that, in this gamer’s humble opinion sounds promising.

The MMO that is currently in development is code named “Copernicus.” Schilling is working with some serious talent for this project, two of them highly notable. One is Todd McFarlane, you know the guy who created that little comic called Spawn. The other is R. A. Salvatore the New York Times best selling fantasy author. The two will be working on bringing the MMO to life and head up the creative direction of the game.

Schilling has been quite clear about his ambition with 38 Studios, as he has stated their goal is “to redefine conventional multi-player gaming as it exists today, and nothing less.” Although it seems almost as odd as a pastry chef becoming an Olympic athlete, this career change seems promising for Schilling. With the talent he has commissioned for his MMO project, it would certainly seem he means business.

Create your Own Saga with Star Wars the Old Republic

One of the most anticipated MMORPG’s to be released, Star Wars the Old Republic is currently being developed by BioWare. The latest in a set of documentaries, the developers discuss the basic plot elements of the game as well as some class dynamics.

Apparently, the plot line of SWTOR is completely dependent on the choices you make. As the game progresses you will be given a series of choices that will effect the plot line. The developers have said you will be creating your own personal Star Wars saga, or as Yoda would say “Much plot line dynamics, we have!”

As of now, SWTOR is rumored for release this year, but the actual release date is unannounced.  In previous years, the pairing of LucasArt and BioWare has been successful; this MMORPG looks to continue that legacy!

And the Winner is…Guild Leader?

Did you tune in and watch this weekends Oscar ceremony?  If you were protesting the Oscars (due to the Dark Knight snub), than you missed out on the coolest World of WarCraft celebrity exposure since…since…Mila Kunis!

Steve Preeg – visual effects wizard, and World of WarCraft guild leader was awarded an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. Steve is known for his work in multiple films including The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and I Robot, but it was for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button that he nabbed an Oscar this weekend.

Preeg is a combat Rogue and he runs a pretty tight guild. They have defeated every raid boss except Sartharion.  Congrats on winning the sweet paper weight! Other than the Hugh Jackman performance it was probably the coolest thing that happened all night.

The Lich King’s Snubbed Classes

For all the WoW Wrath of the Lich King fans out there I am sure you could not imagine any other perfectly suited undead minion then the Death Knight. After all working for Arthas doesn’t pay well, and sure you get eternal life, but very little vacation time.  The Death Knight is the only class that could handle such a stressful work environment, or are they?

In an interview with EuroGamer WoW’s lead designer Jeff Kaplan revealed that there were two other hero classes that were consider for the Warth of the Lich King Expansion. The Necromancer, and the Rune Master.  Jeff said “We were talking for a while about a Necromancer. He would kind of be a range caster, do a lot of corpse explode, that sort of thing.” He went on to say “We also had a cool idea for a Rune Master. That was going to be more of a melee type – think rogue or monk type character. But Death Knight ultimately fit.”

I do think that either Necromancer or Rune Master would have been a pretty wonderfully sinister edition to the hero classes, but ultimately (and I think you all agree) they are girl scouts compared to the Death Knight. I am personally happy that Wow stuck with them.

The NBS 5 most popular video game stories of 2008

It’s been a great year for games and as we consider the past year, we would like to pause and reflect on the big stories that rocked NothingButSoftware. A year with upsets, surprises, and plenty of odd stuff; these are our top 5 picks for the most popular NothingButSoftware Stories of 2008.

Maple Story MMORPG

5.) Maple Story Murder
Simply because it was such an odd story it grew in popularity, and was even given a specific name for the incident “Maple Story Murder.” A story from the land of the rising sun in which a Japanese woman was jailed for deleting another persons character from the MMORPG Maple Story. As ridiculous as it sounds it is true, and it was one of the oddest stories we covered this year!

Mila Kunis on TV

4.) Mila Kunis WoW Confession
Apparently Mila Kunis is a big World of WarCraft fan, and the WoW community loves it! This story dropped during The Max Payne movie release when Mila’s popularity was already growing and this story boosted it even more, at least with wow fans.

Little Big Planet Sack Boy

3.) The Little Big Planet Recall
Most Likely the Biggest upset this year was the Little Big Planet Recall. When the release of this title was quickly approaching a sudden world wide recall was issued, because quotes from Islamic text could be heard in the video games background music. Sony decided to play it safe pushing the game back another week until the quotes could be edited out of the background music.

Street Fighter CHun-Li Image2.) New Street Fighter Chun-Li Pics
Although the New Street Fighter film seems like nothing to write home about, the buzz surrounding this film was quit popular here at NBS.  When the latest photo’s of Kristen Kreuk as Chun-Li were released we did a post on it and it became one of our most popular stories this year.

1.) F.E.A.R. 2 Weirdest Press Release Ever
F.E.A.R. 2 Alma
The oddest story we have covered this year, and most likely our most popular post in history the “F.E.A.R. 2 Press Release.” Although there is a lot of meticulous planning involved in a major press release this one takes the cake. The Entire F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin release was centered around targeting specific Video Game Contributors and sending them creepy unmarked mail, with locations to creepy destinations, to obtain creepy briefcases. Mike Fahey of Kotaku was one of these targets and he had to drive to a storage facility in the middle of the night on thanksgiving to pick up his briefcase. Inside the briefcase was nothing more then promotion material for a F.E.A.R. 2 event in New York, but all the mystery in just obtaining a briefcase of promo material was uber weird.

10 Games to Watch in 2009

As the year is quickly coming to a close, we eagerly look forward to the new year and what is to come from the gaming industry. 2008 has been huge for games, and developers have their work cut out for them in the coming year. Here at NBS with great curiosity and anxiousness we have looked into a couple projects and from what we have seen 2009 has potential!

If you are wondering what is to come in 2009, here is our list of games that we think deserve a look.

10. Batman: Arkham Asylum
Developer: Rocksteady Studios
Due: 2009
Batman Arkham Asylum The Joker Screen

For all of the Batman fans, who are waiting for a game to do the Dark Knight justice this one just may be it. Based on the popular graphic novel this game is a dark, gritty journey through everyone’s favorite funny farm. In Batman Arkham Asylum our caped crusader will have to face some of his most deadly foes; including Killer Croc, The Riddler, and The Joker.  In terms of game play you will not only need to use Batman’s combat skills, but also his forensic knowledge, and tech gear to progress through the game.

9. Wii Punch-Out
Developer: Nintendo
Due: 2009
Wii Punch-Out King Hippo

Based on one of the most beloved classic NES games, Punch-Out is back on the Nintendo Wii.  Mac will be returning in this title as well as his classic competitors; Glass joe, Von Kaiser, and King Hippo. The same type of game play from the classic version will be carried over in this title but with the infusion of motion control. Although the art direction seems more cartoon-like in this title rather then realistic, it still has promise.

8. Aliens: Colonial Marines
Developer: Gearbox Software
Due: 2009
Aliens Colonial Marines Facehugger

Based on the Sci-Fi classic film series Aliens Colonial Marines will pick up where Aliens 3 left off. The plot of this title is based on a search-and-rescue squad in search of Lt. Ellen Ripley, who was last seen on the Sulaco. In this FPS you will play as one of four marines who each have a different weapon. You are able to transition between the four marines, but you have to be careful which you choose because one may be better suited then the other for a specific missions. The classic Aliens will be featured in this game including facehuggers, drones, and the queen. This game is worth a look for Alien fans and FPS fans as well.

7. God of War 3
Developer: Sony Santa Monica
Due: 2009
God of War Kratos

The first God of War in full HD, we will get to see Kratos rip his enemies to shreds in full 1080p. There is not much information out on God of War 3, but from what we have surmised this third installment should be the end of Kratos quest. This title is most likely going to be released end of 2009, possibly 2010.

6. The Sims 3
Developer: EA GAmes
Due: February 2009
The Sims 3 Diamond

In The Sims 3 the scope of your control will be broader then in any previous game. You will have control over an entire neighborhood, in which you can observe the inhabitants, and pop in and out on their day to day lives. When designing your own little universe your customization options will be vast, as you can customize it as well as it’s inhabitants. When designing your characters you will be able to create their physical attributes, as well as personality traits. If you love customization options you will want to get a look at this game as it has more then any other previous title.

5. Star Wars: The Old Republic
Developer: BioWare
Due: 2009
Star Wars the Old Republic Battle

After many rumors and whispers it is confirmed that the MMO title form another LucasArts, and Bioware pairing is in the works. Star Wars The Old Republic will have the two major classes; the Jedi, and the Sith, as well as others for the Star Wars folklore.  Along with a deep storyline, character development will be dynamic as you can choose a path of light or darkness, in which every decision you make has consequence.

4. Bioshock2: Sea of Dreams
Developer: 2K Games
Due: 2009
BioShock Big Daddy

The second installment to the successful FPS,  BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams has been confirmed, and is expected in 2009.  Very little is known about this title but from what we have seen this game could quite possibly be  prequel, although this is just speculation.  Expect this title late in 2009.

3. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
Developer: Monolith Productions
Due: February 10, 2009
F.E.A.R. 2 Alma

In the sequel to uber scary FPS survival horror title, everyone’s favorite psychotic ghost girl (Alma) is back, and she is screwing with more minds then ever before. In F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin you will explore the city that was annihilated by the cataclysmic explosion  of the previous game, in search of answers to the Alma mystery. The same slow-mo feature will be available in this title as you face off against more replica clones, as well as new enemies; living and dead. Get ready to jump out of your skin a second time, around February 2009.

2. Final Fantasy xIII
Developer: Square Enix
Due: 2009
Final Fantasy XII City

The latest installment in the classic RPG series, has at long last been announced. In one of the biggest surprises this year Final Fantasy XIII was confirmed for release on PS3, as well as Xbox 360 to the dismay of Sony. In FFXIII you will be playing in real time, and like in previous titles you will rely on teamwork to progress, using a combination of magic, swords, and guns. Combat will be based around coordinated combo’s and also using the features of each environment to amplify inflicted damage. This title could potentially be the best yet from Final Fantasy.

1. Resident Evil 5
Developer: Capcom
Due: March 13, 2009
Resident Evil 5 Sheva and Chris

The latest Installment in the premiere survival horror series Resident Evil 5 is the most anticipated release of 2009.  Much like its predecessor RE4, this game will have the same over the shoulder view that helped make it so successful. RE5 will revolve around co-operative play, in which you can play as two characters; the Zombie Vet Chris Redfield, and new comer to the franchise Sheva Alomar. If you choose to play alone a highly advanced AI will take the place of Sheva, and If either character bites the dust the game ends. Resident Evil 5 is most likely to be the most visually stunning of any game in the series, and the most enjoyable in terms of game play. A new story, a new continent, and a new way to waste hordes of mutated products of Umbrelle Corp. Resident Evil 5 could be another extremely popular title in this franchise.

First SWTOR Documentary Footage Released

I am personally elated to be finishing out the week with this news. The first in hopefully a long line of installments of documentary footage from BioWare has been released for Star Wars the Old Republic. The video went up today on the official SWTOR website, and it is really our first peak into what we can expect from the game.

In the Documentary the developers go over the basic plot, game play, and a couple other little nuggets of joy from their latest project. I could tell you more but I thought I would embed the video so you could just see it for yourself.  No Release date yet for this MMO title.

ENJOY!

Here is the link to the Video on SWTOR
