The Retrode II: a retro gaming adapter for old school Nintendo and Sega games

Ever wish you could hook up your old Nintendo games to your computer? We do all of the time. And now with Retrode’s latest game adapter, you’ll be well on your way to reminiscing all the old school games whenever, with the convenience of USB magic (why didn’t anyone think of this sooner?), and of course, the Retrode II.

Simply attach either a Nintendo Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis cartridge to the Retrode, plug the USB into your PC, and then download an emulator—aka a program imitator (there’s a list here). After you’ve successfully done those three steps, you will be on your way to some Super Mario World, or perhaps some classic Sonic the Hedgehog.

The Retrode sells for $85 and is manufactured in Germany. If you’re interested, the gaming adapter will be available on January 23.

Nintendo to launch an app store for Wii U

Yet another app store. This time, for the soon-to-come Wii U!  The store is said to be “full-blown,” and will offer a new experience for gamers— much like the iPad’s current storefront and setup.

Sometime between June and December of 2012 is the expected launch date for the Wii U (we were hoping it’d be a little sooner…), and demos can be expected at the upcoming CES in Vegas in a couple of weeks.

Each app sold in the Wii U store will be sold independently on the device, though it is uncertain how much each app will cost, or if Nintendo will even make money off of the store.

Matt from the The Next Web writes, “Nintendo’s offering is set to differ from existing gaming consoles in the respect that its tablet-like controller will be able to operate separately from the console itself, providing game developers with the option to deliver different apps and control options for gamers.”

And despite a reported $923 million loss by Nintendo’s mobile games the first six months of 2011, the app store for Wii U will hopefully be more successful—and maybe they’ll start to consider throwing Mario in there, as they have insisted, “Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo” if they created Mario as a mobile app.

GoldenEye Reloaded to be released this coming fall

This fall, the (somewhat) new GoldenEye Reloaded release is expected to be “refined” and “recharged,” with HD features available for Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii systems.

The updated version has an MI6 Ops mode, similar to Modern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode. The MI6 Ops mode creates alternate missions separate from those completed in single and multiplayer games, adding variability. Reloaded also offers a multiplayer feature, with 16-player online and voice chat being confirmed.

Golden Eye fans know and love the feeling of completing missions, scurrying throughout places like the Facility, and finally getting their hands on the golden gun. And let’s face it, the Nintendo ’64 version of GoldenEye is considered nothing less than a stroke of genius. The game is accredited for defining the modern first-person shooter video game, which is a revolution in itself.

Anticipating GoldenEye Reloaded gamers have a forum going on Facebook. Some commentators are disgruntled that the game was being released to Xbox in the first place, they claimed GoldenEye should be for Nintendo only. The Facebook page also previously had surveys posted back in March to get feedback for GoldenEye games made in the future.

The trailer gives people an idea of what to expect this fall.

Nintendoflix 3DS: Netflix available for 3DS users today

Today is the day where all owners of the hand-held 3DS in Canada and North America can, if they wish, switch over from game mode into movie mode. And like other mobile Netflix apps, the download itself will be free for 3DS users on Ninendo’s eShop, but in order to actually run the app, users must have a registered Netflix account. Unfortunately, even with the 3DS’ 3D capabilities, movies are not able to be viewed in 3D… yet. 3DS users will soon have access to a select library of 3D movies.

This is great news for 3DS gamers who frequent Wi-Fi hotspots in their travels at places like airports, restaurants, and coffee shops. Nintendo is even working with AT&T to provide all 3DS users with free Wi-Fi access with their SpotPass.

3DS users with both a Wii and 3DS system can even stop a movie to pick up where they left off on both systems interchangeably. So if a Wii user was watching a movie and had to leave unexpectedly, the portable 3DS would be able to start the movie where the Wii stream stopped last.

So until 3DS and Netflix release 3D movies, Nintendo 3DS users must settle for portable 2D viewing on their device. Soon enough 3D movie-watching will hit the 3DS, letting people enjoy 3D movies, sans the dorky glasses.

Nintendo 3DS can reportedly harm the vision of chidren under 6

If you are considering purchasing a 3DS for your child, you may want to consider some of the health risks that Nintendo has reportedly issued pertaining to its 3D display. The warning issued pertains to the harm the 3D display can cause children, particularly those under the age of 6.

The warning was issued on Nintendo’s Japanese site, and claims that the 3D display on the Nintendo 3DS can harm the vision of children under the age of 6. The warning notes that the vision of children under the age of 6 is not yet fully developed, and exposure to the 3D display of the 3DS can harm that development.

While the warning is unsettling, according to the report, only children under the age of 6 that are susceptible to harm. It also notes that parents are able to switch from 3D to 2d display and even set a parental lock on the device so that the 3D display can only be viewed with a PIN number.

The 3DS was first unveiled at E3 2010, and is reportedly set to launch sometime in March. GameStop has begun pre-orders for the device for $25 and $50 at select locations.

Sony Reports Manufacturing Cost of PS3 Down 70%

A month ago, the CEO of Activision, Bobby Kotick, complained about the high cost of Sony’s PlayStation 3. Kotick’s threat to Sony, to lower the price of the PS3 or Activision stops making games for the console, is covered here.

Yesterday, in an investor call, Sony CEO Nobuyuki Oneda revealed that manufacturing costs of the PS3 are down by 70%.

Sony reported the company’s first annual loss in 14 years when it released its fiscal first quarter earnings yesterday. Further, the company is projecting over a $1 billion loss through March 2010. Sony may be blaming poor sales on the state of the economy, but people like Bobby Kotick would be sure to argue the price of the PS3 is to blame.

Why does Sony’s PS3 cost so much?

The cost of manufacturing each console is roughly $800. The price to buy a PS3? $399. While it may be the highest priced console against its competitors, Microsoft’s Xbox and the Nintendo Wii, Sony is taking a hit for every PS3 sold.

Sony saw some relief in January when it announced that the cost of manufacturing had dropped by 35% to $450. Though a 70% drop in cost seems to be just what the company needs, which would allow, as rumored, Sony to drop the price of the PS3. But will Sony really want to eat into its new profits, especially after a first quarter in the red and a poor outlook for the rest of the fiscal year?

Activision’s CEO Threatens to Stop Supporting Sony PS3

In an interview with the Times of London, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick threatened to stop making video games for Sony’s PlayStation 3. Kotick blames the high cost of the PS3 and the company’s poor sales of the No. 3 video game console. To the Times, Kotick said, “I’m getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don’t make it easy for me to support the platform. It’s expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better.”

The No. 1 video game console in the United States, the Nintendo Wii, has a price tag of $250. The cheapest version of Microsoft’s Xbox costs $200.  But Sony’s PS3 goes for a staggering $399, causing complaints among many of Sony’s game publishers.

Unfortunately for Kotick, who is calling for Sony to make some price cuts before losing more business, Sony refuses to do as such. Despite reporting a $1 billion loss last quarter, Sony insists that the PS3 is losing momemtum in the mark.  In response to Kotick’s threats, Sony issued this statement, “We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience.”

Kotick may give Sony until 2010-2011 to make a price cut before reconsidering Activision’s support of PS3 and the PSP.  But with a market value of $16 billion as the world’s largest independent video game developer, we’re pretty sure Activision has no qualms about cutting Sony out.

PS3 outselling the Wii in Japan?!?

This may come as a surprise, but for the past 5 weeks straight the PS3 has been outselling the Wii…in Japan!  Nintendo sales are hurting in Japan, despite the fact they continue to boom here at home. Apparently Nintendo is not putting out the software needed to keep its fans faithful.

A Nintendo spokesperson has said “We hope to line up strong software to support hardware sales in the second half of the year.”   The boost in PS3 sales have been attributed to the quality titles they have been releasing, something Nintendo is not doing.

” It is still the first few months of the year when sales are slow for the industry, so we are not particularly concerned.”  From what I have been hearing they should be! Some economists are saying Nintendo’s stock will soon drop and now is the time to sell.

I think that it all comes down to putting out quality games, and Sony has done an excellent job of that.  Last year, we had Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, just to name a few titles.  I honestly can’t remember the last time Nintendo put out a title I was even remotely interested in (aside from Resident Evil 4), and I am not being biased – just realistic. Unless Nintendo starts releasing some innovative games, I foresee this trend continuing.
