SoulCalibur V will be released on iOS devices

SoulCalibur fans, rejoice—on January 19 you can now play SoulCalibur V (watch the trailer here), Bandai Games’ latest version of the beloved game, on iOS devices like the iPad and iPhone.

The iOS version will feature 19 fighters, varying game modes, museum modes, time attack, and arcade, but unfortunately there’s no sign of a multi-player feature like team battle mode (we’re hoping this goes live for iOS and for an Android release down the road).

Don’t expect to get much accomplished after this release, as SoulCalibur is a rather addicting game, similar to classic old school favorites like Mortal Kombat and Tekken – except this time will take place 17 years post SoulCalibur IV, and “will continue the epic story of warriors in search of the legendary SOUL Swords in 17thcentury Europe. The heroic battles transpire in a beautiful and fluid world with eye-popping graphics.”

Major changes have been made to the now 6th version of SoulCalibur, including the removing of “Critical Finishes” of SoulCalibur IV, along with This version will also provide an armor destruction indicator, so there’s no way to tell when protection will break.

Pre-order your copy of the game today, available for XBOX or PlayStation; it hits the stores on January 31. Or if you’re lucky enough to have an iPhone or iPad, head to the app store on January 19 for a sneak peak of what’s to come.

Try on clothes…without actually trying on clothes

We’ve all had that moment where our anticipated online order arrives, then when it comes time to try stuff on, the fit is anything but right. Well, with the combination of XBOX Kinect’s advanced motion-sensing technologies and the latest interactive clothes-fitting concept Bodymetrics, whose “body-mapping technology that makes the perfect fit beautifully simple,” you will be able to try on clothes without ever having to leave your house.

Of course you need the XBOX Kinect-like technology to use Bodymetrics, but e-retailers are probably ecstatic for those who already own the Microsoft-made $150 motion-sensing gadget, as this could potentially change the way we shop for clothes online forever.

CEO of Bodymetrics, Suran Goonatilake referenced an interesting statistic that, “30 percent to 40 percent of clothing bought is returned to retailers. The No. 1 reason is fit[.] [...] That’s the fundamental problem we are solving here, [so] [w]e can reduce the number of returns they have.”

As of now, Bodymetrics is established in retail stores in the UK, but will be making its way to the US in the next few months. No partnerships have been confirmed, but we expect this concept to evolve worldwide.

Venture Beat interviewed the head of fashion at Bodymetrics at CES, telling all of the goods that come with the system – like the fit mapper, where the color blue indicates looseness, and red indicates tightness.

So while you are able to see the size and fit with Bodymetrics, our question is: what about the feel? As comfort is key, too. But this just leads us to believe the next step will be actually being able to have a feel through the screen, which is a cool, but scary thought.

The Displair touch system creates images in thin air

When we saw how Kinect picked up our exact body movements and we were able to feel like we were actually bowling  (or boxing, etc.), our minds couldn’t really fathom it all, but without realizing, we wanted to keep playing and playing until our arms felt like they were going to fall off; this new technology had completely changed the way we play video games.

But now there’s a new gesture interface system that blows Kinect out of the water: the Displair touch system, allowing you to take computer-generated images and make them visible in thin air in just a matter of seconds.

Natasha Starkell writes, “Displair’s award-winning technology, developed in a student dormitory, has only 0.2 seconds lag time between gesture and computer reaction, compared to a 0.1 second lag time of KInect for Xbox 360, using up to 1500 points in its multi-touch screen system with 1cm accuracy. Microsoft Research is also making advances in gesture recognition, as is demonstrated in the video[,] however such technology is not commercially available yet.”

CEO of the Russian company based in Astrakhan, Maxim Kamanin, thinks the DisplAir technology could be prominent in none other than the advertising market.

So how does a system like this work?

Upon the stream of cold fog acting as a “screen,” images are produced through an infrared camera to pick up any gestures, compared to Kinect’s camera movement-detecting technology that can only respond to movements at large, ultimately producing an image in thin air, so to speak.

In Finland they are also toying around with this phenomenon. An organization Fog Screen “adds wow factor with its large air displays to the entertainment and retail industries,” and “[use] multi-touch laser movements [for] [...] special effects such as brick wall collapsing as a person walks through.”

With all of this advanced technology comes a hefty price: between $4,000- $30,000 gets you the DisplAir, depending on size, etc.

We want to try! For the time being looks like we’ll envy Tom Cruise as he strolls through the mall in Minority Report…

Skyrim gets good reviews and “reaches new heights of adventure”

The past couple of weeks have been full of exciting game releases with Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty hitting the shelves. Call of Duty blew past game sale records away, raking in over $400 million in the UK and North America in the first 24 hours, selling 6.5 million games. Battlefield 3 sold only 5 million in the first week, making it quite a competitive on the shelves.

But there’s something new being thrown in the mix, Elder Scrolls’ latest: Skyrim. Gamers, expect minimal hours of sleep while you’re busy slaying dragons and “foil[ing] the nefarious plots of vampires, evil mages, and demon gods.”

Lou Kelstenwrites, game enthusiast and game review blogger writes that he is obsessed with the game, so much so that it has “taken over [his] life.”

“It doesn’t look promising at first. You are a mysterious prisoner being led to your death. As you rest you head under the executioner’s blade, though, a dragon arrives and starts belching fire—giving you a chance to escape.”

The stunning visuals in Skyrim make for a fantastic adventure through the artistically beautiful plains, mountaintops, and nature’s aurora borealis. After you create your custom character and complete various quests that are granted with even more freedom than previous titles, as you take on the world of enchanting lore and secrets waiting to be discovered.

Skype becomes an official Microsoft affiliate

Microsoft has been all over the map as far as acquisitions go; rumors have been circulating they were even thinking of purchasing Yahoo. Their latest? Skype.

CEO Tony Bates of Skype went viral last night, “delighted” to announce the inclusion of Skype in their company. In a video he said, “[j]oining forces with Microsoft is the best way to accelerate this mission and capitalize on our position at the intersection of social, mobile, and video communications. Simply put, we want to transform communications. We will do this by building the best products in the world that allow all of us to do things together whenever we’re apart and by creating teams who work faster and smarter across the globe building those world-class products.”

Though it was announced back in June that Microsoft had made the purchase (an $8.5 billion cash deal), three months later it now been made official after the European Union’s approval.

Bates will now become president of the new division, working directly with Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO. They plan on hiring an “outstanding senior management team” to develop new products and strategic acquisitions. Expect Skype to be integrated into many of Microsoft’s current and future products such as Kinect.

Bates emphasized his goal of reaching 1 billion users daily in his statement, and with this dynamic duo this can be expected. Future plans for the merge include his visionary of the world in a few years that is “one of complete, pervasive video communications, something that’s across all parts of your life.”

GoldenEye Reloaded to be released this coming fall

This fall, the (somewhat) new GoldenEye Reloaded release is expected to be “refined” and “recharged,” with HD features available for Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii systems.

The updated version has an MI6 Ops mode, similar to Modern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode. The MI6 Ops mode creates alternate missions separate from those completed in single and multiplayer games, adding variability. Reloaded also offers a multiplayer feature, with 16-player online and voice chat being confirmed.

Golden Eye fans know and love the feeling of completing missions, scurrying throughout places like the Facility, and finally getting their hands on the golden gun. And let’s face it, the Nintendo ’64 version of GoldenEye is considered nothing less than a stroke of genius. The game is accredited for defining the modern first-person shooter video game, which is a revolution in itself.

Anticipating GoldenEye Reloaded gamers have a forum going on Facebook. Some commentators are disgruntled that the game was being released to Xbox in the first place, they claimed GoldenEye should be for Nintendo only. The Facebook page also previously had surveys posted back in March to get feedback for GoldenEye games made in the future.

The trailer gives people an idea of what to expect this fall.

Sony Reports Manufacturing Cost of PS3 Down 70%

A month ago, the CEO of Activision, Bobby Kotick, complained about the high cost of Sony’s PlayStation 3. Kotick’s threat to Sony, to lower the price of the PS3 or Activision stops making games for the console, is covered here.

Yesterday, in an investor call, Sony CEO Nobuyuki Oneda revealed that manufacturing costs of the PS3 are down by 70%.

Sony reported the company’s first annual loss in 14 years when it released its fiscal first quarter earnings yesterday. Further, the company is projecting over a $1 billion loss through March 2010. Sony may be blaming poor sales on the state of the economy, but people like Bobby Kotick would be sure to argue the price of the PS3 is to blame.

Why does Sony’s PS3 cost so much?

The cost of manufacturing each console is roughly $800. The price to buy a PS3? $399. While it may be the highest priced console against its competitors, Microsoft’s Xbox and the Nintendo Wii, Sony is taking a hit for every PS3 sold.

Sony saw some relief in January when it announced that the cost of manufacturing had dropped by 35% to $450. Though a 70% drop in cost seems to be just what the company needs, which would allow, as rumored, Sony to drop the price of the PS3. But will Sony really want to eat into its new profits, especially after a first quarter in the red and a poor outlook for the rest of the fiscal year?

Activision’s CEO Threatens to Stop Supporting Sony PS3

In an interview with the Times of London, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick threatened to stop making video games for Sony’s PlayStation 3. Kotick blames the high cost of the PS3 and the company’s poor sales of the No. 3 video game console. To the Times, Kotick said, “I’m getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don’t make it easy for me to support the platform. It’s expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better.”

The No. 1 video game console in the United States, the Nintendo Wii, has a price tag of $250. The cheapest version of Microsoft’s Xbox costs $200.  But Sony’s PS3 goes for a staggering $399, causing complaints among many of Sony’s game publishers.

Unfortunately for Kotick, who is calling for Sony to make some price cuts before losing more business, Sony refuses to do as such. Despite reporting a $1 billion loss last quarter, Sony insists that the PS3 is losing momemtum in the mark.  In response to Kotick’s threats, Sony issued this statement, “We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience.”

Kotick may give Sony until 2010-2011 to make a price cut before reconsidering Activision’s support of PS3 and the PSP.  But with a market value of $16 billion as the world’s largest independent video game developer, we’re pretty sure Activision has no qualms about cutting Sony out.
